Movie News

​The Hobby: Tales from the Tabletop is a movie about people who love boardgames, and why we love them. I'm one of the people they interviewed (and went birding with!), but don't just watch it for my few minutes on screen. Watch it because it is full of joy. If you're deep into the hobby, it's full of people you'll recognize...but even if you're not a gamer, there are characters who will absolutely delight you. Now streaming on Apple TV, Amazon, Fandango, Google, Verizon, and Dish.

Game News

Sanibel

Sanibel won't be for sale until 2026, but it will be on preview at Gen Con next week! If you'll be there, come to one of the times I'll be at the booth and I'll have something Sanibel-related to sign for you. All of the slots to play the game are sold out, but I'm pretty sure you can come watch.

Undergrove

You can now play Undergrove on Board Game Arena!

Next Wingspan Expansion

I just reviewed the final files before they get sent to the printer later this week. I had seen some of the art along the way, but this was the first time I had seen all of it in one place...and it is as gorgeous as you would expect. Stonemaier is predicting an early 2026 release. I can't wait.

  • 6PM: Women in Toys Open House for women in the games industry (probably only early, I have an overlapping event)
• Saturday
  • 9-10 AM: At the Avalon Hill booth with Sanibel (sign up for a time slot)
  • 1PM: My main talk, Nature Systems Game Design. It's sold out, but the Gen Con people tell me that there are often no-shows...so if you swing by, you might get lucky.
  • 8PM: TTGDA member mixer (check your most recent newsletter if you're a member)
• Sunday
  • 9-10 AM: At the Avalon Hill booth with Sanibel (sign up for a time slot)
  • 1PM: Span-Span-Span with Finspan designers David Gordon and Michael O'Connell (also sold out, you might be able to get in at the door)

In the fall

• October 23-26 I'll be at Spiel Essen​
• November 13-16 I'll be at DAU Barcelona (their website isn't updated for 2025 yet)

Miscellaneous Media

• A short published poem about Wingspan: I Like the Birds About It​
• I went on a Canadian tour with the director of the Hobby! We were on Breakfast Television, CBC's Early Edition, and the movie podcast ScreenFish., and Vortex put together a sweet little highlight reel of the tour on Instagram. (Browse their account for more)
• One of my best friends from high school has a book coming out called Remaking Democracy: How We Make the Worlds We Want​

Featured Critter: Barred Owl

If you're ever walking through the forest and hear birds freaking out in a particular area, always look to see if you can figure out WHY they're freaking out. I've seen foxes, hawks, and snakes this way...and this week, a barred owl. (And somehow, my Bluesky post about it has over 8000 views.)
